Capstone

Heading 1

What is a Capstone?

What is a Capstone? The capstone is a rigorous learning opportunity that allows students to reflect and share in personally meaningful ways and is a requirement for Career-Life Connections and for graduation. The purpose of the capstone is to let students demonstrate the knowledge, competencies, and passion(s) that they can offer the world, as they integrate personal interests, strengths, and new learning with preferred future possibilities. It is a deeper learning experience that supports the student’s continued learning journey into post-graduation possibilities and provides an opportunity to reflect and synthesize as well as showcase and celebrate.

The capstone includes, but is not limited to, three components:

1. Self-assessment and critical analysis: Students reflect on experiences in school and out of school, assess development in the Core Competencies, and share highlights of their learning journey and preferred next steps.

2. Process and representation: Informed by their critical analysis, and connecting to their plans for post-graduation, students engage in a deeper learning process with intent as they design, assemble, and share their capstone representation.

3. Showcase and celebrate: Students present their learning journey, including plans for post-graduation, to a relevant audience

The capstone components are an opportunity for students to further develop and showcase their strengths, passions, and learning journey to a relevant audience. As a celebration of their learning journey, the capstone is a place where students are encouraged to share successes both in school and out of school, including their reflections on Core Competency development, their contributions and aspirations, and their plans for post-graduation. The capstone can take many different forms, depending on student needs and interests and the opportunities available in local school communities.

Capstone FAQ

When does my Capstone project need to be finished?

Exact date is TBD but early May will be when your project will need to be finished, presentations will be after that project due date.

Can I use a major project that I did in another class, or my Science Academy Capstone?

No - the 2 credits you are getting for completing CLC B and the Capstone are unique - as such your CLC Capstone Project needs to be it's own identifiable thing, separate from your other course work.  Of course that other course work can serve as inspiration in developing your CLC Capstone.
Do I have to have all the details of my project figured out before completing the Application?

No - having said that your Application should serve as the blueprint for your project, it should include a thought out structure, timeline and steps.

How 'big' does this project have to be?

It is difficult to generalize, but Capstones are meant to be a rigorous learning opportunity.  Capstones should be a deeper learning experience that supports the students' continued learning journey.  This cannot be accomplished without a significant investment of time and energy.
